The Science Fiction Condition

"To be a futurist, in pursuit of improving reality, is not to have your face continually turned upstream, waiting for the future to come. To improve reality is to clearly see where you are, and then wonder how to make that better.

Act like you live in the Science Fiction Condition. Act like you can do magic and hold séances for the future and build a brightness control for the sky.

Act like you live in a place where you could walk into space if you wanted. Think big. And then make it better."

That's an excellent image.

The quote reminded me a little of Maslow's Jonah Complex. He considered this to be very common.

One day, Maslow asks his students "Which of you expects to achieve greatness in your chosen field?"
The class look at him blankly. After a long silence, Maslow says "If not you—who then?"

Basically we're often imprinted to be afraid of succeeding or of changing reality.

Right on!

And yeah, I wonder how much all that revolution of lowered expectations type stuff might be holding us back.

I like that bit from Prometheus Rising: "We are all giants, raised by pygmies, who have learned to walk with a perpetual mental crouch."
