The REJECTED Mixtape

Following the lead of my fav early 2000’s indie comic writers, Chynna Clugston, Jim Mahfood, and Dan Robinson, REJECTED features music queues throughout the book, and so I thought it'd be fun to put together a digital mixtape soundtrack, now that such things are possible!

REJECTED - A Hodgepodge Graphic Novella (Serialized Web Edition)

Tomorrow begins the serialization of my graphic novella REJECTED, which will run for the next 2 weeks, every morning at 8:08 AM EST here on the blog.

LOGLINE: A heartfelt mashup of several rejected comix proposals (circa 2003-04), whose fragments combine into a ridiculous metafictional portrait of the fartist as a young fool.

INTRODUCTION: Why REJECTED is a bad comic, but I love it anyways!

REJECTED is comprised of fragments from 4 different rejected comic book proposals circa 2003-04. In hindsight, they were all pretty poorly developed comics and were rightfully rejected. I had also made the mistake of basing characters on myself and my girlfriend at the time, so when I got dumped shortly thereafter the premise of the comix quickly became null and void.

So I’m 23 years old, forced to move into my brother’s basement, with a box full of reject comix pages, and no prospects of any kind. What do I do? I didn’t want all that work to go completely to waste, so I cut up all my rejected comic proposals into a single absurd story, and slapped on an embarrassingly ridiculous ending.

I then submitted my meta-reject comic to the Delaware Division of the Arts for some residency grant program they have, knowing I’d never get it, but just wanting to keep it pushing. The response I got back was amazing! Not only did I not get the award, but the rejection letter contained a lengthy, almost angry, denouncement of my work. Most rejection letters are very brief, “we regret to inform you… thanks and best wishes,” but this was something else entirely! The person who was assigned to evaluate my proposal didn’t just want to reject it, they wanted to destroy it. My favorite line, amidst all the name calling, and one that I enjoyed so much that I included it in future editions of the book, complained that it “never approaches the qualities of fiction found in even its most experimental forms.”  Admittedly this is certainly how delusions function, but I began to think maybe I was on to something after all…

So yes, against the better judgement of numerous experts & professionals, this comic exists. TBH it's not a particularly coherent production, though hopefully well worth a buck or so a gander, and however cringe-worthy it is in parts, I’m very proud there’s something instead of nothing.

Vintage Agnosis! Title Cards

The original printing of Agnosis! (then called @gnosis!) featured title cards designed by the Mythic Mr. Moist, whose prolific perfection is a thing of suburban legend. I tried to duplicate, or at least approximate, his immaculate design scheme to keep the theme going for future episodes, but even w/ all my fancy gadgets, I couldn't touch what he did w/ a few minutes, a sharpie, and a piece of paper :)

Zombies in the Sun

Back in 2006 I commissioned Agnosis! artist Marcelino Balao III to draw up some flyer artwork for a particularly super awesome punk rock show at the local watering hole.

My fav song at the time was "Zombies in the Sun" by Man Without Plan, which is where the design idea came from, but also check out Bubba Ray Tumo from Agnosis! soaring across the sky :)

The Science Fiction Condition

"To be a futurist, in pursuit of improving reality, is not to have your face continually turned upstream, waiting for the future to come. To improve reality is to clearly see where you are, and then wonder how to make that better.

Act like you live in the Science Fiction Condition. Act like you can do magic and hold séances for the future and build a brightness control for the sky.

Act like you live in a place where you could walk into space if you wanted. Think big. And then make it better."

The Game of Life Tarot Cards

While working on the new edition of Timothy Leary's "The Game of Life," I designed updated versions of his tarot trump cards, which I ended up not submitting, so as to not further complicate and delay the book's chaotic production.

22 of the 24 cards feature grey-scale digital restorations of Pamela Colman Smith's artwork from the Rider-Waite tarot deck.
(Which I hereby release to the public domain! Because it was a bear cleaning up all those cards, and no one need do it again.)

The other 2 cards were designed by me, pictured above, per Leary's descriptions.

And so without further ado, presenting: The Game of Life Tarot Cards
Timothy Leary's reinterpretation of the Major Arcana as a mythic 24-stage model of evolution.

Making It New

This here's the logo I designed for that famous New York baseball team featured in my upcoming comic DAZE OF FUTURE PASTIME.

I originally wrote DAZE back when I didn't have regular access to the internet, and so I expected I'd have to tweak some of the historical fiction, but I wasn't quite prepared to discover I'd set the story 2 years too late, thus negating some key plot points.

The story depends on several real life happenings occurring on the same day, and suddenly it seemed no such day existed! Oh no! My comic is ruined! All that work! I mean, of course I could just fudge it, and probably no one would ever notice, and even then I could just play the alt timeline/parallel universe card, but still! It's totally not the same.

But then O happy day! I found July 7, 1951. The only day in the history of the world that this story could have occurred. A day when New York played Boston in a game of baseball, at Fenway Park, and certain somethings happen!

SPOILER ALERT!

Macho Man 2012

Back in 2012 I tried to score some cheap pop w/ another pic of Macho Man preventing an apocalypse, this time featuring a Mayan themed main event, but it was justifiably downvoted to oblivion for being too hot to handle, too cold to hold, too sweet to be sour, OH YEAH!

Though like the cream of the crop, I expect this dank meme will eventually rise to the top!

GRANPA O'DONNELL

This is a redux version of a drawing I did for my Granny before she passed.

My Granny used to tell tale about, once upon a time, coming home from the Acme during a snow storm and seeing a familiar figure in the distance. Someone who looked just like her long deceased husband. This person bid her a friendly "hello," from afar, and then walked on into the wintry mix.  Upon reaching the location where the mystery man had been standing, she could find no footsteps in the snow.

Coming Soon! DAZE OF FUTURE PASTIME

WINTER 2016

The next comic I'm publishing is a redux version of this 2003 collaboration w/ The Main Man hisself, Timmy Toner!

It's got a super fresh coat of paint and a brand new surprise ending that changes everything!

Agnostic Bodhisattva

Whew! That Marcelino Balao III draws straight fire! Happy to say that Marcelino and I are currently composing the sense-shattering finale to the Agnosis! series. We've been working on this book, on and off, for over a decade, and I am entirely ecstatic that this most impracticable story is actually going to reach its conclusion soon.

If you've been following along, there's about 48 unpublished pages left to go, each more preposterous than the last!

If you haven't been following along, I don't blame you, this stuff reads like stereo instructions!

Redux Reruns

If you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you!

A fair amount of the stuff I post here will be recycled content from my vast & sundry archives, updated and re-purposed so as to fit in w/ my current techne, and thus hopefully fresh enough to be worth another gander!

RE-EMBLOGGENING (Back in the RSS!)

I think I’ll start web logging again!

I don’t suppose blogs are as fashionable as they used to be, but they remain my fav of the social mediums, and RSS my preferred method of sharing art stuff.

I’ve mostly been working on longform projects lately, and thought it’d be nice to have an outlet for my more ephemeral nonsense. I think blogs are the most fun when they update everyday, and so I’ve got the first few weeks all queued up to auto post every morning at 8:08 AM EST.

I’ve created and deleted probably a dozen websites and blogs over the years, and so who knows how long this run will actually last, but any which way seems fine enough to me!

See ya tomorrow!
